A generational story about families and the special place they live in, sharing love, loss, laughter and life. Based on the comic book “Here” by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a strip in the comic book magazine Raw in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point early in the film, Richard’s father mentions the names of several towns he claims are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are towns along Interstate 80 in PA that had not yet been built. [from trailer] Richard: You know, if you want, you can spend the rest of the night here. Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here. Features They Stooge to Conga (1943). LIKES: Good acting Realistic in many aspects of life Dynamic use of set design Creative transitions Rejuvenation technology Some fascinating connections at certain moments I loved the artistic approach at the time Accurate/understandable Emotional Summary: The film’s advertising was not lying. Here is a film that is truly one of the most unique concepts we have seen in a while. The film relies on you to enjoy fixing on one camera/location and telling a story about the impact of time on life and the people who move through it. Zemeckis has mastered this task on many levels and has managed to use the space well and keep the shot dynamic despite being so static. The dynamic changes in the environment make this piece fascinating and the idea of changing furniture is a feature of the house itself that is impressive and serves as a metaphorical window into life. I loved watching the people and families who called the villa home, live in this room, seeing their interactions, auras, and personalities that cast a different light on the scene and tell their own micro-stories. The transitions occurred across the contours of the photograph, drawing attention before developing into a new scene, the technique is smooth and rarely overdone in my case. It had many aspects that were creative but never lost the anchor of realism to make it a nice and balanced piece of work. In terms of story and acting, the A-list talent helped bring this film to life and achieve its goal of being a look at life. Here is a film that relies heavily on being relevant, and the cast brings that relevance to life. When it comes to history, it rarely strays from the people living life, taking pieces from different eras and reflecting them over time. The highs and lows are beautifully captured on screen, and Zemeckis’ vision helps to hammer home the concepts and hit you with the emotional punch that this film promises. When the right stories hit me, they only strengthened my connection to the film, and I found myself pondering what the film was meant to teach me. The acting is there to give words to the visions, and much of the dialogue is poetic without being too Shakespearean. Bettany was a surprise, and while it’s not as engaging or dynamic as his Disney films, he still manages to captivate me with his great performance as a baby boomer facing the rapid changes taking place in the world. Wright’s return to the big screen is explosive, as her character is torn between fun and madness, a brilliant portrayal of the struggles that have befallen many in her position over the long decades of change. Hanks is, of course, as talented as ever, incorporating elements of his other characters into every moment of his life and doing so with the same class and verve that he almost always brings to the screen. It’s a chemistry that works, this family atmosphere that feels so natural and almost authentic with strong heroines who carry the characters and never fall too far into Hollywood pretensions.
