The tool turns fragmented policy updates into structured, contextual analysis, delivering timely insights for journalists and professionals navigating complex policymaking environments. The project is especially aimed at small and independent outlets, lowering barriers to the AI era while creating paths to new revenue and greater accountability in how AI accesses journalistic content. We received a significant number of applications from around the world, 372 to be exact, and the finalists were selected by an independent panel of four experts in the field together with the JournalismAI team.

Presenting news results in helpful ways

Google News

What it glaringly lacked, though, was support for local news from my own city. Honestly, it felt like one of the worthy alternatives to Google News. For someone in India, the search just continued. When I started my search, the internet kept pointing me toward SmartNews. So when I went looking for alternatives, I was still very much looking for news aggregators. That’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve stuck with Google News so far.

God knows I tried, but I still couldn’t find a news app that felt as comprehensive and as direct as Google News. I also experimented with a few apps that let you build your own news feed using RSS, like Feedly — there are plenty of such apps on the Play Store. The content density was just right, and so were the news types and overall quality (which I presumed would get better over time). I don’t know how broadly Google is showing these “trending topics” AI headlines yet, but it seems the company is testing them beyond the Google Discover news feed, too. I’ve seen fewer examples of egregious clickbait, partly because Google Discover is now serving me quite a few unadulterated news stories alongside its AI ones — though it does cut off their genuine headlines far too quickly, making many tough to read. Like I explained last month, these AI headlines are akin to a bookstore replacing the covers of the books it puts on display — only here, the “bookstore” is the news tab that appears when you swipe right on the homescreen of a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel phone, and the “cover” might be a AI-generated lie instead of the truth.
